As a composer I don’t have a protective shield against what’s happening. It goes right into me and sort of empathetic overdrive. I love this show, I mean it just puts you on the rack. One minute you’re flying around London, next minute you’re on some kind of go-kart in space, and then it just comes down to two people saying goodbye, quite often, and it’s tragic. It kills me every time, so yeah I really live that and it’s a great show to work on. (x)

(While we’re waiting for the pharmacist to come out, they tell me they’re expecting their daughter any day now. The pharmacist has been watching the young couple since they came in.)

Pharmacist: “These are fine, but can I ask why you need them?”

Female Customer: “Oh, I have a horrible cough that’s making my back ache even worse. I can’t get to sleep.”

(The pharmacist goes through a list of cough medicines safe for her to take, before the young man shakes his head with tears in his eyes.)

Male Customer: “I’m sorry, I’ve just lost my job and we really can’t afford any of those. Sorry for wasting your time.”

Pharmacist: “That’s okay, but this packet is damaged, and legally I can’t let you take it. Seeing as it was the last one, let me and [my name] go look in the back for some more.”

(The pharmacist takes me out the back, where he puts three packets of name brand painkillers, four bottles of name brand cough syrup, a wheat bag for her back, a tin of formula, a packet of newborn nappies and a few of the hats the couple was looking at into a box. He hands me the box and tells me to take it out to them. I do and they both burst into tears, thanking us over and over again. They leave with huge smiles on their faces.)

Female Customer: “Thank you again!”

Other Customer: “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help but over hear. Did you say you just lost your job at [local company]?”

Male Customer: “Yes, I was an IT tech.”

Other Customer: “I own [other computer store in the area], and I’m looking for a new tech. Can you start tomorrow?”

(There were tears all round that night. A week later, the young woman brought in her beautiful daughter and a giant batch of cupcakes for the pharmacy staff. Best night at work ever!)

KATE THIS IS ACTUAL PURE EVIL. Ummm…TV. I think. But only because I literally cannot go a day without listening to music.

Yep! When I was 9 years old I won my year group’s public speaking award for my 2 Minute Talk on Roald Dahl’s life. I had to give my talk in front of the whole school (250 kids, plus grown ups and parents). I also won the Musician of the Year award at my middle school (1998, yeah baby!), and in upper school I won first place in the Senior Musician category of my school’s talent contest. Which really wasn’t that hard, because I was the only person in my category. But STILL.

ETA: I forgot! I once won a Radio Phone In competition which was about older people and technology. They loved my story about the time my Grandma put a video cassette in the recorder with the cellophane still on and broke the whole thing. Bless her.

Ugh. Yes.

I find the Snape/Lily narrative to be really horrific, honestly. The fact that we are asked to feel oh so bad for poor little Snape makes me a little bit queasy.

Because, yes, I do sympathize with Snape for having a rough childhood.

But he was a horrible friend to Lily. He ignored her feelings. He screamed racial slurs at her. He favored the idealized version of her he had built up in his mind over the REAL her (I think it is significant that James’ patronus is a STAG, showing compatibility with Lily; while Snape is a DOE, showing a mimicry of Lily). That idealization and inability to reconcile how his own actions contributed to the failure of their friendship literally KILLED Lily.

I understand that we can show some sympathy for him. Watching someone self destruct their own relationships because of abuse and peer pressure and the tribulations of childhood? That’s tragic.

But then he grows up to emotionally abuse Lily’s son for having a physical resemblance to her husband.

And we’re supposed to feel sorry for him? We’re supposed to think it’s lovely and sweet that Harry names his child after the teacher who emotionally abused him for years? Who emotionally abused OTHER children for years as well?

The fans who sit around and cry about how Lily SHOULD have picked Snape, how Snape DESERVED her? How James was a horrible douche and Lily was a bitch for choosing him? Ugh. No. nno no no no on oonononononononoooooo.

Oh the shit that went down with Remus makes me really want to break his teeth.

Remus had been HOMELESS. Remus had spent much of his adult life implied to be on the streets, unable to find work, and completely unable to make new friendships or relationships after Lily and James died, Peter vanished, and Sirius went to jail (ALL of which is DIRECTLY Snape’s god damn fault.)

And then just as Remus picks himself back up again? Becomes a positive force and father figure to Harry? Snape deliberately and purposely gets him FIRED so that he will be unemployed and potentially homeless AGAIN.

How the fuck am I supposed to show any sympathy for an adult who completely lacks the ability to show sympathy, or even human decency, to others?

Don’t forget Snape’s bullying of his other students a.k.a. the children he was hired to teach and nurture. When thirteen-year-old Neville Longbottom was confronted by a boggart for the first time, his worst fear was Severus Snape. Most of his classmates saw monsters or creatures, things that could do you physical harm (Harry’s boggart literally turned into a SOUL-SUCKING PERSONIFICATION OF DEPRESSION) but Neville, whose parents had been tortured by this point, Neville’s worst fear is the emotional abuse of his potions teacher.

And when a fourteen-year-old Hermione was cursed by one of her fellow students, amplifying a physical feature she was already self-conscious about, did he defend her or punish the boy who cursed her? Did he offer her the barest form of human decency by sending her to the hospital wing or undoing the curse himself? No. He looked at her and said, “I see no difference.”

The Purity Myth.

If you’re a female this should concern and frighten you in a big way.

I love this. I’m really sick of hearing people shaming girls for being “impure”. Accepting and being open (or not open) about yourself sexually is nothing to be ashamed of and should never be looked at that way, especially when it comes to females. Granted, I agree that sex shouldn’t be a part of anyone’s life when they’re in a general age range because in my opinion, it should come with a certain maturity level. But the point is, this whole purity complex needs to stop being hammered into girls’ heads the minute they come out of the womb. The world is naturally sexual; that shouldn’t have to change. But this is a media-ruled society, and it really lies in the media to stop encouraging ignorance as if it’s something to be proud of and start recognizing women for more than their bodies.

This is terrifying and amazing. It blows my mind that men seem to be the loudest voices condemning feminism and promoting “purity”. That should really sound an alarm for people.

I actually felt sick watching this. That scene with the father/daughter just seemed unnatural, and it creeped me the fuck out.
At the end of the day (Jeremy Kyle eat your heart out), people should let people whatever the fuck they want to do with their own bodies, and they shouldn’t think any less of them for their own personal choices.
